This was a red-letter day! About 2:00 I glanced out the bedroom window
and saw something black and unusual. It was Mama Bear and two cubs,
munching berries in our back yard! I was thrilled of course and grabbed
the 35mm camera, slowly pulled the mini-blind up, and began shooting photos.
It occurred to me that there might not be any film in it, so I got my single-use
camera and got some shots with it too. I sure hope the pictures come
out good! For about 20 minutes, I followed from window to window
as they worked the back yard and then the side yard. They even decided to check out our dog Charlie Sue's area. They ate the little
dab of food she'd left and then the three of them went back to the side
yard. About that time here came the third cub! They must have told
him about the dog's dish, so he went over and cleaned it some more.
I stuck my head out the door and took a quick photo of him. I only
dared to do that because Mama Bear wasn't close, and I've heard they can
move very quickly. Eventually they headed off into the brush.
I was glad Howard had taken Charlie Sue along with him, or the bears wouldn't have come for tea! Howard was running errands and not going to the church, an unusual thing for him. He and Charlie had seen one bear as they drove out of our subdivision, so when he got home and saw Charlie's dish standing against the house, he knew the bears had been there. The three cubs are each less than half the size of their mother. They are black bears, not grizzlies, so they aren't naturally aggressive; but the mothers are very protective of their cubs, so having them "visit" was at once exciting and a bit frightening. We are careful with our garbage outside, because we don't want their visits to become a habit. Sure wish I could have had the zoom lens ready for bear! |
